Pointers To Have A Kempt And Safe Garage Or Tool Shack

There are a number of benefits to keeping your garage which you transformed into a makeshift workshop or your standalone tool shack organized. For one, it helps you find the things you need and secondly, it keeps you and your loved ones from falls, injuries, poisoning as well as fires. Below are some workshop organizing and safety tips.

Organizing Your Workshop

Using clear plastic containers is a great way to keep your tools organized. To make your life easier, it is best to store accessories and supplies with or near the tools they are used with. It would be a good idea to label these boxes as well or attach pictures to them so you won’t have to rummage through several containers just to find one tool.

It is recommended to make use of wall-mounted shelves in your garage or tool shed too. By doing this, your storage containers do not litter on the floor and use up precious space. That way, your containers don’t take up valuable floor space. Just remember to anchor the shelves to the wall and not overload them to avoid tip overs. Also, always store heavier items closest to the ground and those you frequently need in easy-to-reach places.

Using tool cabinets is a great way to maintain a clutter-free garage or workshop. At the same time, they extend the service life of your hand and power tools since they are not exposed to the elements. There are several kinds of tool cabinets available, but it would be a good idea to buy one with wheels so you can transport it to other parts of your home as necessary. As you did with the plastic containers, remember to label your tool cabinet’s drawers. To keep the items placed in them sorted out and easy to find, placing dividers in them would be a wise move as well.

Prevent injuries in your workshop

Sharp and electrical tools should be placed inside a locked tool cabinet so that children cannot get to them. To prevent falls, you have to make sure that your garage or tool shed floor is free of clutter. For the same purpose, you have to promptly remove spilt grease and slippery substances on the floor to avoid accidents. It would make sense to install bright lights in your garage as well. If you have children, never leave them in the garage alone or unsupervised.

In addition, never keep gasoline inside your garage as vapors can explode with the littlest of sparks. Also, keep chemicals out of reach of children and away from heat.

While organizing your workshop does require some time, money, and patience to pull off, it is nonetheless rewarding. Your missus, as well as your pals, will surely praise you for having such a neat and clutter-free garage.

Wheel Dollies For Transporting Tyres And Vehicles – ToolsRUs

Letting you move a car, trailer or even a lawn mower simply by pushing it, certain wheel dollies are great for storing, restoring or servicing vehicles. For removing or replacing large, heavy tyres and wheels onto big rigs, other types of dollies are necessary. If you are a hobby car enthusiast, mechanic, restorer of classic automobiles or work in a showroom, chances are you will have use for a set of wheel transport dollies. Those who are accustomed to working with large wheels such as truck technicians and others have plenty of use for a heavy-duty wheel dolly with or without a hydraulic jack.

Technicians require a large amount of leverage to get the wheels on and off the hub if they want to save their backs. The routine task of switching out large tyres is made very easy and quick with the help of a special type of wheel dolly designed to lever the parts up and onto the hub. Capable of moving and installing tyres up to 135 kg with ease, these special dollies are very rugged and built from heavy-duty tubular steel. Purely manual lever dollies have a design with a bent shaft to improve leverage. With built-in rollers, it’s easy to move a wheel around once it’s off.

Hydraulic wheel dollies are even more powerful. They are capable of handling wheels that weigh nearly 700 kg with struggling. A powerful hydraulic cylinder system controls an on-board jacking mechanism. Depending on the dolly, the tool may provide a lift of up to 20 cm. Swiveling casters on the dolly itself allow for easy maneuverability. Typically, large hydraulic dollies can accommodate tyre’s of any size. Smaller manual dollies may be limited, however, in terms of what they can load. Ball Joint Pullers, Chain Blocks and Winches

A far different kind of wheel dolly is used to move whole cars or other vehicles. For disabled vehicles, moving restored classic cars or for storing and/or moving automobiles indoors, this tool is very handy. You will need at least two dollies for trailers and four dollies for cars. Each dolly of this kind has four durable casters about 9 cm in diameter. Each dolly can support about 450 kg for a total of 1800 kg when the four are used together.

Tractors Lifts For Your Lawn Mower – ToolsRUs

Available in manual and hydraulically controlled varieties, tractors lifts are handy tools meant to make cleaning, servicing or repairing your lawn tractor or zero-turn mower easier and more convenient. While manual lifts look like push reel lawn mowers, hydraulic lifts resemble mini automotive hoists. Manual lifts are far more affordable, but you can’t get all the way under a tractor. Capable of raising a whole tractor to a height of two metres or more, electric/hydraulic lifts are more versatile. They are rated to bear a weight well over a tonne and do not take up very much space in a garage of shop.

With the right conversion kit, virtually any type of lawn tractor can be raised with a manually operated tractor lift. To hoist the front end of the tractor up, a manual lift uses a lifting bar, basically a long shaft that gives you a lot of leverage. Attached to the lifting bar are two brackets that raise and support the tractor. To prevent the lift from moving when in use, there is a safety bar. The design is filled out a single-bar handle with rubber grips and two pneumatic tyres for easy moving. The tyres are also necessary to roll the lift under the tractor and raise it. With some designs, a screw thread jack might be used to raise the telescoping arms and lift the tractor.

Hydraulic tractor lifts, on the other hand, resemble automotive hoists, only they are much smaller. You drive your tractor up the runway and onto the platforms. Once secured, you raise its height by means of an electrically powered hydraulic cylinder system. This fixed shop tool can raise a tractor two metres or higher and can support a load of a tonne or more. With wide, long platforms, they can accommodate most personal lawn tractors.

Automotive Exhaust Stands – ToolsRUs

Automotive Exhaust Stands

Exhaust stands are tools common to professional auto repair shops. They have a very specific purpose, namely, to support the exhaust line underneath a vehicle when it has been raised on a hoist. These stands are rated to bear a certain amount of weight, so they should never be used to support any more than that. Nor should it be used to support a vehicle’s axle or other underbelly components. The tool’s maximum weight capacity, its minimum height and its maximum height are the three important specifications regarding this type of stand.

Because the exhaust components of many cars, trucks and other vehicles weigh about the same, exhaust stands don’t come in a lot of sizes with widely varying capacities. In general, this type of stand is designed to support about 750 kg, more than enough for pipes, a muffler or other exhaust system components. The minimum height of most stands is around 1400 mm, while the maximum reach may exceed 2000 mm. Adjustment is made to the stand with a spinner nut and ball bearing assembly.

The base is generally a circular foundation made of steel with an arched, pyramid-like fixture on it. The base tube which supports the main column inserts and threads into the cavity in this fixture. The main column is the component that gives the stand its height. Into the top end of the column goes the bearing assembly, the threaded ring through which passes the threaded rod. This rod is entirely threaded and is what extends the stand’s height. Shorter and narrower than the main column, the rod fits inside of it. A handle with two, rubber-sleeved arms and a center cylinder threads onto the rod. The part that comes into contact with the exhaust assembly is the saddle, a Y-shaped steel part that mounts to the top of the rod.

Because the handle is affixed to the top of the column, it stays in place while pushing the threaded rod upwards, along with the saddle, when twisted. The upward pressure exerted holds the exhaust system component in place while you make repairs or make to remove it. The base is easily detachable thanks to a removable fixing rod and R-clip.

Engine Stands For Auto Shops – ToolsRUs

To firmly support and hold an engine while you rebuild or repair it once it’s out of the compartment, an engine stand is needed. To vertically lift the engine out of the compartment, an engine crane is needed, but once it’s out, the stand is used to support it. Most commercial auto shops will have both a crane and a stand for engines. The crane features a high-strength chain from which to hang an engine. Once suspended by the chain, it can then be attached to the stand for repair.

Capable of supporting engines from a half tonne to three tonnes, there are different types of engine stands. Mechanics who work on heavy diesel engines require a very durable three-tonne engine stand. Likewise, if your shop specialises in sports car engine repair, a stand rated for lighter engines will suffice. Versatile engine stands may be able to accommodate other components such as a vehicle axle or a transmission drive train. Depending on the needs of your home or professional auto shop, there is an engine stand that fits the bill.

The stands are constructed out of high-strength welded steel with and feature a reinforced neck which prevents the frame from bowing under the extreme weight. Some feature a powder coat finish to protect against oxidation and corrosion. There are several different frame designs available, some with four legs, some with three. An engine stand may be of a fixed design, or it may be foldable for easier storage. Two heavy-duty casters are included on all stands. For added maneuverability, lighter stands feature four or six casters. Stands made for the weightiest of engines rest their durable frame on the shop floor but feature two casters on the frame ends. This kind of stand can only be moved by tipping it up on end, so not when an engine is mounted.

The mounting head is the component of the stand to which the engine attaches. To give you access to every side and part of the engine, this head can rotate a full 360 degrees. The heaviest duty stands may feature an integral hydraulic jack that lets you raise the height of the engine in order to swing it into the optimal position for repair.

Mechanic’s Car Jacks – ToolsRUs

Getting a lot of use whether in a home garage or pro auto shop, car jacks are handy mechanic’s tools. When you need to change a tyre or prop a car up onto a jack stand, this tool is ideally suited, although it is only intended to support a vehicle temporarily. If you plan on doing some work to a car’s brakes or have to slide underneath the vehicle to get to a part, a jack should only be used to hoist the vehicle up so you can slip a jack stand under the axle. The improper use of a car jack could result in serious injury.

There are two basic kinds of car jacks: screw thread jacks and hydraulic cylinder jacks. Often made to work with vehicles of a particular make and model, screw thread jacks are in some cases included as an OEM part with cars and trucks. Many aftermarket jacks with a higher load rating use a hydraulic cylinder system rather than a screw thread mechanism.

Once properly placed so that the jack saddle comes into contact the structural framework of a vehicle, the hydraulic or screw thread motion lifts the car off the ground. Manual force is required with both types of jack, but either way it gives you a mechanical advantage.

Jacks come with a maximum lifting capacity measured in tonnes. Most are capable of lifting at least 1.5 tonnes, but some are built to lift 3 tonnes or more. Bigger, more powerful jacks can be used on weightier vehicles. Larger floor jacks typically feature casters so they can be moved around a shop. Smaller models have no wheels.

A jack is placed under the edge of a vehicle near the tyre that will be raised. It is important that the saddle comes into contact with the framework, not some component that could potentially get damaged by the force. Attaching and twisting the speed lever, a screw thread jack is raised. With hydraulic jacks, the saddle is raised by pumping a removable handle. To lower a hydraulic jack, remove the handle and reattach it to the safety pressure release valve. Once activated, the valve slowly releases the built-up pressure, safely bringing down the vehicle without falling.

Vehicle Hoists – ToolsRUs

Vehicle hoists, also called lifts, are essential tools for mechanics, for they allow you to stand or climb underneath a vehicle to make repairs. Available in numerous varieties, a hoist is designed to support considerable weight. The alternative to an above-ground lift is an in-ground model which features hydraulically powered columns that rise out of a shop floor.

Made for repairing vehicles of all shapes, sizes and weight, automotive hoists are built for certain applications. Some companies offer varieties with a 12,000 kg minimum capacity. With successively bigger lifts, the load rating climbs higher and higher. Environmentally friendly and suitable for both home and commercial shops, above-ground hoists require a fairly uncomplicated installation.

Varieties include 2-post, 4-post, heavy-duty, motorcycle, storage, low-rise, mid-rise and scissor lifts. The most basic type are 2-post lifts, yet most of them are still rated to support nearly 20,000 kg. They may extend as high as 350 cm or higher and make a great budget choice for a small auto shop. Their design consists of dual steel columns joined by a base plate that bolts to a shop floor. Extending out in a V-shape from each column are two support arms. These are the components that support the weight of the vehicle. They swivel out of the way while the vehicle is driven into position then they are moved under the chassis and locked into place.

To generate the force necessary to hoist a vehicle up, hydraulic cylinders are used. A chain drive system is used to control the upward movement of the support arms. For most lifts, a vehicle can be raised in 60 seconds or less. Safety features include numerous locks to prevent the support arms from moving as well as a pressure-release system so a car may be lowered in a safe manner. 4-post lifts typically feature runways and platforms on which the vehicle parks.

There are other types of automotive lifts as well. Low- and mid-rise scissor hoists don’t allow an operator to stand beneath a vehicle, but they nonetheless provide ample vertical space to make repairs. To raise the busses, big rigs, service trucks, military vehicles and more, a variety of heavy-duty, 4-post lifts are commonly used.

Vehicle Engine Cranes – ToolsRUs

Because of the weight of the block, a special tool is needed to remove or replace a vehicle’s engine. Designed to bear a lot of weight, engine cranes are used to by professional and home mechanics alike. Depending on your needs, there are several features to look out for when choosing the right tool for your shop. Like most tools, it is better to get a quality tool for a little more money rather than be thrifty and buy something that won’t perform in the long run.

Engine cranes feature a durable design made from welded steel. Their finish consists of an enamel or a powder coating, and this guards the metal from rust and corrosion. For the sake of easy storage, some cranes feature foldable legs, while others are of a fixed design. All engine cranes come with four or six highly durable casters. Heavy-duty models may have casters about 8 cm in diameter with on-ball bearings. The lockable, swiveling casters provide for easy, 360-degree mobility.

The boom of the crane is the part of the body that supports a hanging engine by means of a heavy-duty chain. Multi-position booms give you a wider range of options when moving engines of different weight. Four-position cranes, for instance, are designed to support a two-tonne engine when the boom is closed and a half-tonne engine when it is fully extended. The tool also features two inner settings capable of supporting a one-tonne and one-and-a-half tonne engine, respectively.

Take a look at our welding helmets, inverter welders and Cylinder Leakage Testers

To get an engine up and out of a vehicle’s engine compartment, the chain hooks on and a hand-operated hydraulic pump is used. Engine cranes top out at two tonnes, but that is more than adequate for any passenger vehicle. The crane’s wide base ensures that the weight of the engine doesn’t cause the tool to tip. The boom’s height is also adjustable so the crane can accommodate a variety of vehicles. Some models can be extended to reach a height of 240 cm or more. The higher the crane can reach, the better, and that’s a must for deep-set engines in large trucks.

Auto Shop Car Trolleys – ToolsRUs

Depending on the type, car trolleys are a vital tool found in any auto shop and are meant to be used alone or in pairs. Other businesses may have use for a car trolley, especially those that see disassembled or wrecked vehicles. This tool is relatively lightweight and easy to use. With a durable chassis made from high-strength steel, car trolleys are designed to support vehicles up to a certain weight.

Basically, a car trolley is slipped under the chassis of a vehicle. Depending on the type of trolley, it may either support just the front or the entire weight of the vehicle. One person can move the disabled vehicle relatively easily and even maneuver it in close quarters. Trolleys are best suited for transporting damaged or partly dismantled vehicles.

Crafted from durable components, a car trolley is designed to withstand a massive amount of weight. One type of trolley should be used in pairs. With one towards the front of the vehicle and one towards the rear, the entire car can be supported and moved. This type of trolley features four heavy-duty casters for easy rolling. Two of the casters feature locking mechanisms.

This basic type of trolley is capable of being fitted with a V-crutch or other towing mechanism. With the trolley(s) and towing unit attached, the vehicle can be moved and maneuvered.

Larger, I-shaped trolleys are supported by as many as ten casters. A support beam is mounted to the frame which holds up the vehicle. With a tow arm that extends out from the frame, an operator can now push or pull the vehicle with relative ease.

Check out our 2kva generator, Tractor Lifts and Yankee lift

For the most part, car trolleys are only suitable for vehicles without tyres. They are not built to raise up a car like a jack. While a car trolley could be useful almost anywhere, auto and body shops as well as automotive junkyards have the most use for the tool. Necessary in any commercial auto shop, they provide a fairly inexpensive solution to moving a car without tyres.
