As much part of growing up in the sixties to eighties in South Africa, as were marmite and cheddar cheese and peanut butter and syrup sandwiches, so were 1400 bakkies. There was absolutely nothing on the local market to equal the legendary bakkies of the 1400cc derivative, which were relatively cheap, economical to operate and a real workhorse with tremendous reliability. These bakkies, definately, helped to create a bakkie culture in South Africa, most definitely between the city dwellers. Later, manufacturers also introduced what is these days named the double cab bakkie, but more on this later.
These 1400’s, as they were known, were typically pretty spartan with vinyl seats, the minimum of instrumentation and no radio as standard, but they had 4 wheels and a half ton load area. They were absolutely perfect for dad to cart Mom’s rose garden debris to the dumping grounds, as general run a bouts, as “fishing vehicles” and to chase rabbits in the fields. Make no mistake; they were equally at home on the farm as a light bakkie and as a workhorse on the farm.
These bakkies at the end of their “careers” often found re-employment and were then pensioned off as some strange guises to their original purpose. Some had their engines stripped out of the body and employed to drive water pumps and other devices, though others found their “bakkies” converted to donkey carts along our dusty rural roads. Some off course did duty as playthings for farm children, whilst others sadly were simply left to rust and ruin.
Interestingly enough you can still find some on the road today, albeit much sun bleached, bent and rattling. Others, however, have found their way to panel beaters and nice restoration individuals and are incredibly popular with male varsity students. (This is most likely due to the fact that you can load a lot of girlfriends onto the 14 hundred – particularly if they are standing. Or at the lack thereof, a lot of beer will fit onto the half ton bakkie) These vehicles of yesteryear remain well-liked until this day often as a third utility vehicle due to the fact that they’re cheap to run and to maintain, whilst being pretty problem free. There are still a reasonable number to be found in the classifieds and they retain a reasonable cost thanks to their continued popularity. The 14 hundred, of course, was the forerunner to the double cab bakkie of today.
These new vehicles are horses of entirely different colours in their numerous variants available on today’s market. There are workhorses, there are also leisure vehicles, then there are the 4 x 4’s and finally the genuine luxury versions. These bakkies are used by many families as the “family car”, as they are able to seat 5 individuals, often have leather seats, sophisticated sound systems and even built in navigation systems. Compared to the old 14 hundreds, the new double cab bakkie version is like a castle on wheels and the pride of many a Dad, whom is unlikely to agree carting the garden refuse around in it.
But, as life goes, like some 14 hundreds, marmite and cheese and peanut butter and syrup sandwiches also remain popular, if only with the moms making them

Well what happens when you do decide to go on that 4×4 experience with your single cab bakkie and realise the terrain and skills needed to be able to enjoy the 4×4 experience is a lot harder than initially expected. The learning curve can be a pricey one, especially when damaging your single cab to the point where its irreparable, or losing it over a steep cliff or having it washed away in a river crossing. Using a 4×4 doesn’t have to be that expensive.
It isn’t about how big your vehicle is or how much torque your vehicle has, but it is ALL about finesse. Below are some tips and hints on finding and acquiring this so called finesse when it comes to off road madness.
1. You need to be aware of your speed at all times. Some softer terrains like sand your speed needs to be moderate and flotation through mud and snow needs to be kept up, meaning, as fast as necessary. If your speed is moderate and flowing, you are able to react better in certain situations, for example moving rocks etc. Going slow helps when you have a ground clearance deficiency resulting in less hard knocks and bumps when driving over large rocks along the path.
2. When you are in doubt with what lies ahead for you on the path, get out and walk up ahead to survey the path. Make sure you go through the obstacle checking to see what is beyond the obstacle too, making sure you have a run off area or space afterwards when going through the obstacle. Surveying the path ahead also gives you a better idea of the obstacle and where to place the tires. Once you have committed to the obstacle, follow it through.
3. When going up or down hills, make sure you are going directly up and directly down. If you attempt these at a diagonal position, you can easily get the single or double cab to rollover.
4. Reducing the tire pressure improves traction in all terrain conditions, especially sand. Remember that ground clearance has been compromised.
5. When crossing over ditches or logs at an angle make sure that one wheel at a time goes over the obstacle; the other three help the one wheel to climb over.
Following these easy steps will improve your 4×4 experience and keep your single and double cab in good shape ready for you to get back on the road and return safely to your home.

When you are in the market to buy a new mode of transport, you will be faced with many different options. One of those options is between a normal motor car and a bakkie. The word bakkie is a South African name for a pick up truck. Many people have their own idea of what motor vehicle they would like to drive, and luckily, there are many options out there. In a lot of instances, people are not well enough informed about bakkies to be able to make an educated decision.
Largely, normal cars are favored due to economical factors. Normal motor cars are cheaper to fill with gas and maintain. Well, this is the belief, but it is changing rapidly. A lot of drivers prefer to drive in luxury, and are therefore eradicating the cost effectiveness of motor cars. As technology and manufacturing capabilities have progressed, so have the designs and shapes of SUVs and bakkies. Bakkies are becoming more luxurious, and owning an SUV can be far more satisfying than a normal motor car. The designs now make single and double cab vehicles, which are capable of carrying passengers in the utmost style! With the needs of modern holiday goers, normal motor cars are just not good enough!
Bakkies have far more carrying space and capacity than a normal car, and are therefore ideal for a larger family. In addition to the extra space for passengers, pets can also accompany the family on holiday if you own a bakkie. A bakkie or xenon will be able to pull your trailers, boats, campers, or anything else you wish to take on your journey. The cargo bed will provide sufficient space for all luggage, including bicycles and the like.
The numbers of urban dwellers who are choosing bakkies over other vehicles is rising rapidly. Their all terrain capabilities, hardiness and super power make them a pleasure to own and conquer your holidays with! Even if you are not the avid holiday maker, a bakkie could still be of great benefit to you in regular traffic. Bakkies are deemed to be safer vehicles to drive because they are heavier and thus more likely to fare well in a collision.
