BMW Wheel Problems

When fitting 18 inch or above wheels to a BMW 5 series some vibration concerns could be encountered. When fitting any type of non standard alloy wheels which you can acquire from accessory shops, vibration may occur when you go over 60 miles per hour. Also this vibration might occur under braking, which may cause you to believe that a wheel balancing problem is out of the question. As this fault may happen when someone is traveling around the 50 – 60 MPH, people may assume it is just a balancing problem.

On personal experience I have had the tyres balanced and rebalanced several times with thinking there is a little improvement each time, but then the fault appeared to come back after a day or so. As the defect also occurred when the car was under braking, I was led to consider that the fault lay in the brake discs being warped and eventually had these changed when the MOT was due. Once the new discs and pads were fitted, the vibration trouble was still present.

It was said to me that the track control arms are commonly the problem that makes the car pull to the left when braking and no doubt the cause of the vibration. So I decided to replace both items. The following thing tried was checking to see if the wheels were buckled and I also changed the back for the front wheels and visa versa, but with no better results.

Now most of the after market BMW 5 series alloys you will find are suited to fit the BMW E39 model as well as the E34 model which means that the wheels should be the same and many suppliers will tell you they are the same. However a hub on the E34 model BM is much smaller than its newer sister, which means that even although there are plastic shims supplied with the wheels they are not suitable. Three different styles of aftermarket alloy wheels were tested on my E34 BMW including one set of BMW MV style type 1. The next set of wheels was some TSW style wheels and then some AC Schnitzer type which are ok on my now updated E39 model. Only when really fitting 18inch and above wheels did the problem arise.

Then by luck I was looking through EBay and I came across some metal shims which are designed especially for the BMW E34 to stop this vibration problem. After fitting these shims the vibration vanished. If you are experiencing the same woes, it may be worth you taking a look on eBay yourself to find some.

Solve Overheating On 3 Series BMW

You may encounter you own one of the BMWs that suffer from an overheating problem. The BMW 3 series E36 example is known for an intermittent overheating problem. It seems to affect the 316 4 cylinder models roughly around the years of 1996 to 1999. So my advice would be to check this item as your next port of call as it is a less costly option than going to change the head or gasket and then finding out that this was the cause all along. Any hoses that look like they might need changing, should be done at the same time, to make sure there are definitely no other leaks in the system. The newer versions of the BMW 3 series and BMW 5 Series normally didn’t seem to suffer from these type of overheating trouble.

BrandsZ Top 100 Names BMW Most Valuable Auto Brand

BMW has risen to the top of the Millward Brown BrandsZ Top 100 survey, making BMW the most valuable automobile brand on earth, reports AutoNews.com. Toyota Motor Corp. had been the leader the year before in the annual poll, but their recall troubles and travails in Congress knocked them back to the number two spot among automakers (26th overall). While Millward Brown Global Brand Director Peter Walshe believes Toyota will bounce back next year on the BrandsZ Top 100, BMW AG will enjoy its position for as long as possible. A nine percent decrease in value from 2009 means that BMW backed into the top spot, leaving the door open for Toyota once they recover from their current problems. By contrast, Toyota’s brand value dropped a whopping 27 percent over the same period.

BMW is king, but Ford is gaining fast

Not to be outdone, Ford and Volkswagen increased in value significantly according to the BrandsZ Top 100, to the tune of 19 and 20 percent, respectively. Walshe attributes Ford’s success to technological innovations like voice-controlled systems, improved emission control and a strong social media presence. Along with Audi, VW made a fine showing because they are “viewed as trustworthy brands with style, global distribution, German engineering and lower prices than prestige.”

Toyota isn’t the only automotive brand that suffered

Luxury automotive brands like Mercedes-Benz (11 percent) and Porsche (31 percent) also took significant brand value hits, which is part of why the combined value of the six automakers that made BrandsZ Top 100 is down 15 percent overall. The 15 percent drop is the largest in any sector on the survey, thanks to bailouts and recalls.

The Volcanic Ash Cloud Might Halt US BMW Production

The recent volcanic activity of Eyjafjalajokull filled the skies around Iceland and Europe with a huge ash cloud that could halt production of BMW automobiles at the US company’s factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina, reports AutoNews.com. If trans-Atlantic flights continue to be delayed for two additional days, says BMW spokesman Mathias Schmidt, the German automaker will be unable to supply the necessary transmissions to assemble X5 and X6 sport utility vehicles.

BMW hurting because of ash cloud?

If you think BMW’s bottom line would be hurt be a production layoff, imagine what the ash clouds from Eyjafjalajokull are doing to the airline industry and what a possible Hekla eruption could do. {According to the BBC, the International Air Transport Association finds that airlines are losing around $ 300 million per day total due to flights canceled because of the ash cloud}. Billions of dollars might be lost if this continues for weeks. As many as 63,000 flights have been canceled since the eruption chain created the ash cloud on April 14.
